Carrane Hill 1 Wind Farm
County Sligo

Carrane Hill wind farm has a mean elevation of around 430 metres and an average wind speed at hub height of around 9 metres/second.

The wind farm lies within Carrownadargny townland close to Geevagh, approximately 20km to the South East of Sligo Town, in County Sligo.

The site is surrounded by commercial forestry to the west and north east, but is itself generally clear of trees due to its extreme elevation and wind speeds.

The first phase of the Carrane Hill Wind Farm (Carrane Hill 1) consists of four Gamesa G52 turbines and was constructed over the summer of 2006. It was commissioned and commenced generation in November 2006 and operates under an Alternative Energy Requirement VI power contract.

Carrane Hill was officially opened on one of the very rare sunny days in July 2007 with a ribbon cutting by the late Mr Brendan Mc William and a blessing given by Father Alwell and Father Cullen, of Drumkeeran and Geevagh Parishes.

Brendan subsequently wrote a short piece on the wind farm in his usual inimitable style for his Weather Eye column in the Irish Times. For those unfamiliar with his eloquent prose a copy is available to download.
